A.Definitions

The simple past tense itself is one of the basic tenses used to show events that occurred in the past.

B. Formula / Formula

▶️ Nominal Sentence

In nominal sentences, the predicate part is usually filled with  to be . In  the simple past tense to be  used is  "was"  for singular subjects and  "were"  for plural subjects. And also in this sentence it doesn't use  a verb , but uses  a noun, adjective,  and  adverb .

Sentente Noun Formula:

The simple past tense formula   for positive, negative and interrogative sentences is:

(+)  Subject + to be (was/were) + complement

(-)   Subject + to be (was/were) + not + complement

(?)  To be (was/were) + Subject + complement

Example :

( +) Andika was a pilot

(-) Andika was not a pilot

(?) Was Andika a pilot?

▶️ Verbal  Sentences

As the name suggests, it is a verbal sentence, so this sentence will definitely use  a verb . Well, as we all know,  there are 3 types of verbs or verbs  in  that tense  ( verb 1, verb 2, verb 3 ), and in  the simple past tense  the verb or  verb  used is  verb 2 . Which means it is no longer a basic verb, but has changed form because it has been influenced by time (past).

The verbs or  verbs  used in  this tense  are divided into 2,  regular verbs  ( verbs that just add the ending  -ed ) and  irregular verbs  ( verbs  whose form is different from  the basic verb  ).

However, unlike  the simple present tense , the verb or  verb  in  the simple past tense  will not be influenced by the subject used. So whatever subject is used,  the verb form will remain the same.

There is one more thing that needs to be emphasized in  simple past tense verbal sentences  , namely that if the sentence is in negative and interrogative form, then the verb or  verb  that was previously in past form ( verb 2 ) changes back to the basic form of verb or  verb 1 .

Example

The following is an example of a  simple past tense  verbal sentence

  • (+) The nurse  went  to the hospital  yesterday(The nurse went to the hospital yesterday.)
  • (-)  The nurse  didn't go  to the hospital  yesterday(The nurse did not go to the hospital yesterday.)
  • (?)  Did  the nurse  go to  the hospital  yesterday(Did the nurse go to the hospital yesterday?)
